Why are custom actions important?
In today's competitive market, loyalty programs have become essential. But now more than ever, it is important your program doesn't feel overly transactional and feels unique to the brand.
When done right, loyalty isn't just about discounts—it's a reflection of a brand's identity and values. At rediem, we enable brands to customize ways for customers to earn rewards that align with their ethos. It's about more than just getting perks; it's about creating a real connection with your customers and engaging in meaningful ways. When brands nail this, it builds stronger bonds with customers, increases brand recall, and keeps them coming back, which helps the brand shine in a crowded market.
Overview
Setting up custom actions
In the rediem backend, navigate to Program > Points > Ways to Earn.
Step 1: Click "Add Ways to Earn"
When setting up custom actions, you have three options: you can build from scratch, build from a template, or clone an existing custom action.
Build from Scratch
Select "Build from Scratch" when you want to create a customized way to earn unique to your brand.
Build from Template
Need help brainstorming different activations? Browse our action templates! We release new templates frequently, especially around holidays, so you can plug and play!
Clone Existing Action
Have an activation you launched in the past that you want to bring back but change a bit? You can duplicate previous custom actions.
Step 2: Add the "Name" of your action and a "Short Description" of the action
In the example below, this is the title for the action, ie. "Recycle your Viv Packaging" and the short description is "Show us that you recycled your Viv box"
Step 3: Add the "Action Description," which includes more details about the action and how someone can get credit for it.
Step 4: Set if the action is repeatable
To set an action repeatable means that the same customer will be able to take this same action to get points multiple times. You can decide how frequently. This is a case-by-case basis and it is important you allocate points accordingly.
Step 5: Set a start date and end date
Set start and end dates if you only want this action to be available for a certain period of time -- maybe it's a limited-time action based on a holiday or it is a challenge that is only a week or month long. If this is going to be an evergreen action (a permanent part of your loyalty program) leave this blank.
Step 6: Decide if you want the action to be "featured" in the dash
You can make actions that you want to get more attention featured in the dash, which means these will be front and center for the customer to see.
Step 7: Add relevant tags to the action
As part of the community feed, you can add relevant tags to each action you create so customers can easily find those posts. You can learn more about setting up tags here.

Step 8: Add a banner image to the action
This image will be displayed on the custom action page in the dash.
Step 9: Filter by Shopify Customer Tags
Use your Shopify customer tags to segment who sees what actions. If you want all customers to see the action, leave it blank. Learn more about segmentation here.
Setting up Tracking Details
You can track custom actions in several different ways. You can use Image, Image with Geo, Link Tracking, or Reciept Upload.
Tracking Instructions
No matter which tracking type you choose, you will need to add tracking instructions to make it clear to the member what they need to do to get credit for the action. For an image-based action, it might be something like "Take a picture of you recycling our packaging." For a Geo + Image Action, it could be "Visit Target and take a picture of us on the shelf." For link tracking, it might be "Sign the petition." And for receipt upload, it can say "Take a photo of your receipt."
Image-Based Custom Actions
Image-based actions can be tracked in three ways:
Live Image Capture
Live image capture actions can be taken on mobile only. It means the customer can only take a picture live -- they cannot upload an existing image. This adds friction but is an important option if it is crucial that you are verifying the action is being taken in real time. An example could be you want to reward customers for "washing clothes on cold" -- that has an environmental impact that the company could promote, so it is essential the photos are taken in real-time to validate them. For custom actions that are set up to be repeatable at a more frequent timeline (i.e., every day), this can also prevent customers from reuploading the same photo.
Image Upload
Image uploads can be taken on both desktop and mobile, making it easier for customers to participate in these actions. You might want to use image uploads for challenges that include a photo context element or actions the brand is comfortable with members not taking in real time.
Both
Choosing both means members can take an image in real-time or upload a photo from their files or camera roll.
Image and Geo Custom Actions
Image and geo-based custom actions are automatically defaulted to "Live Image Capture" since if you have an additional geolocation layer, it is assumed the action needs to be taken in real time. Examples of use cases here could be rewarding customers for attending an IRL event or popup (you would add the event's location) or rewarding customers for finding your products in-store!
We recommend keeping the radius to 100 (or more) to ensure a large enough radius around the location.
Note: You can also upload a CSV if there are multiple locations (e.g., you are in hundreds of Targets and want to reward people for visiting any of them). Just make sure to download the CSV template and upload the coordinates instead of the address. Learn how to get a store's geocoordiantes here.
Link Tracking Actions
Link-based actions are very easy to set up—for example, you could post a link to your brand's WhatsApp group or a petition you want to reward members for signing!
Reciept Upload Actions
For a full omnichannel loyalty experience, you can reward customers for their in-store purchases by having them upload a receipt after they buy your product. Be sure to add the names of the stores you are sold in and all potential product names to give our AI receipt scanner the best chance to seemlessly accept and reject receipt uploads.
Setting up Reward Points and Impact Details
Points
Decide how many points the customer should earn for taking the action. We recommend you base this off of your margins, whether or not customers can take the action multiple times (and how frequently), and how important this action is for your brand.
Impact Details
Set impact numbers based on completing the action. For example, if the action is to plant a tree and trees planted is one of your impact numbers, you can add a tree planted to each customer who completes the action's individual impact number.
Setting up optional email settings
Reply to
Here, you can add an email if you want customers to be able to respond to the points earned email that goes out (for example, if you need to coordinate something with them or they might have questions about a giveaway, etc.).
Content
We have automated emails that go out on your behalf, but here, you can add a custom paragraph to those emails based on your custom action. This will be added to the "Points Earned" email for this specific custom action (for example, if you want to send everyone who takes this action a special note confirming an entry into a giveaway, a promo code, etc.).
Setting up Correlated Tasks
Add tasks if there is a specific task you need to take with the custom action taken. Learn more about tasks here.
