Setting Up Basic Actions + Points Currency

Everything you need to know about setting up the basics for your program!

Updated over 7 months ago

During your initial onboarding, you will be prompted to set up your initial rewards structure, including the number of points they will receive each time they purchase from you.

Overview

Points Currency

The default here is “points,” but why not get creative? If you’re a skateboarding company, you could call them “ollies.” If you’re a kombucha company, you could call them “bubbles.” Every opportunity to customize your program to align with your branding and values is a chance to stand out and connect with your loyal fans.

You’ll be prompted to name your points currency in onboarding and can also find it in your backend under Program > Points. After you’ve named your points, your customers will immediately see the currency name reflected on the dash!

rediem effect: while it may look like a simple detail, your points currency can be another fun and unique differentiator for your brand.

Points Expiry

Determine if you want your customer's loyalty points to expire. You can customize when points expire by setting a Duration and Points Expiry Start Date under Program > Points.

In the example above, any points earned by customers after January 1, 2025, will expire one year after they are earned. You can customize the duration of point expiry down to the day. If you launch your program without point expiry, you can choose to start point expiry on a date after the program's launch. In this example, if the program was live before January 1, 2025, any points earned on or before that date will expire on January 2, 2026.

Setting Up Basic Points

While customers will be excited to get points for completing actions and challenges, they will also get points for the standard suite of elements, such as purchasing, celebrating a birthday, or sharing on social media.

Sign Up Bonus

We recommend being very generous with your sign-up bonus. You’ll want customers to be adequately motivated to take the extra step to sign up for your loyalty ecosystem. Think of those 80,000 bonus points credit card companies give you just to get you to open an account with them!

Points for Purchases

These are the points your customer gets with each purchase. We set these up as a percentage of the total purchase value, the default being 5%. For example, if a customer places an order for $100, they receive 5 points back.

rediem effect: When determining the “cost” of your rewards, it's important to consider your points for purchase amount.

Points for Celebrating a Birthday (or Other Milestones)

Customers love to feel celebrated by the brands they love on their birthday. You can also set up your rewards program to give a gift of bonus points on other milestones, such as their anniversary with the brand or another custom milestone. For example, if you are a plant-based snack company, you could celebrate your customers for their “vega-versary” (the year they became vegetarian/vegan).

Points for Following on Social Media

Let’s admit it - we all want more followers! You can allocate points to customers that follow you on any of the following social platforms:

  • X (formerly Twitter)

  • Facebook (Meta)

  • Instagram

  • TikTok

To reward customers for following your brand on social media, go to the points section on your backend, select “add ways to earn,” and select from the menu of available social media platforms.

You can also create "custom actions” to add other social media platforms, such as LinkedIn, BlueSky, etc., or reward customers for sharing selfies on social media or participating in social media-based challenges.
