How It Works
Challenges are limited time ways to earn that increase engagement in a program. Launch a challenge around a holiday or another marketing initiative to build excitement.
Time a challenge around the launch of a program to help generate buzz. Since challenges only run for a limited window, offer more than points as a reward for participating.
How To Set It Up
Click Add Ways to Earn.
Choose how to build the challenge. Select Build from Scratch to create a fully custom action, Build from Template to start from a pre-built action template, or Clone Existing Challenge to duplicate a past challenge and adjust it.
Add a Name for the challenge and a Short Description, for example a name of "Recycle Your Packaging" with a short description of "Show us that you recycled your box.".
Add an Action Description with more detail on how a customer earns credit for the action.
Set the action type to Featured, Quick, or Default. Featured places the challenge front and center in the dash for extra visibility.
Set the challenge to repeatable if customers can complete it more than once. For a week or month long challenge, set the repeatable frequency to daily.
Set a Start Date and End Date for the challenge. Challenges typically run for a week or a month.
Add relevant tags to the challenge so customers can find related posts in the community feed.
Add a banner image for the custom action page. A square image can also be uploaded.
Set audience visibility using Include and Exclude Shopify customer tags. Include limits access to customers with the listed tags; leave it empty to make the challenge visible to all customers. Exclude removes access for customers with the listed tags; leave it empty if no customers should be excluded.
Decide how many points a customer earns for participating. Base this on margins, whether the action is repeatable and how often, and how important the action is.
Setting Up Tracking
Track challenges using Image, Image with Geo, or Link Tracking.
Add tracking instructions for every tracking type so the customer knows exactly what to do to earn credit, for example "Take a picture of X.", "Visit Target and take a picture of us on shelf.", or "Sign the petition.".
Image Based Custom Actions can be tracked three ways:
Live Image Capture — Mobile only. Customers must take a photo in real time and cannot upload an existing image. Use this when real-time verification matters, such as rewarding customers for washing clothes on cold, or when the action repeats frequently and needs abuse prevention.
Image Upload — Available on desktop and mobile. Use this for actions where a live photo is not required, such as challenges with a photo contest element.
Both — Customers can choose to capture a photo live or upload an existing image.
Image and Geo Custom Actions default to Live Image Capture since adding a geolocation layer assumes the action happens in real time. Use this for rewarding customers for attending an in-person event or popup, or for finding products in store. Keep the radius at 100 or more to cover a large enough area. Upload a CSV of coordinates instead of addresses when tracking multiple locations, such as rewarding visits to any of several store locations.
Link Tracking Actions reward a customer for visiting a link, such as a WhatsApp group or a petition.
Setting Up Additional Action Types
Beyond Image, Image with Geo, and Link Tracking, use the following action types when building a challenge.
Receipt Upload Actions verify a purchase through an uploaded receipt and use AI scanning to read the receipt. Toggle AI Approvals On or Off to control whether a scanned receipt is approved automatically. Choose from three variants:
Fixed Reward — Reward a customer a fixed amount for uploading a valid receipt.
Product Amount Spent — Reward a customer based on the amount spent on qualifying products.
Product Quantity — Reward a customer based on the quantity of qualifying products purchased. Set the product combination check to Match Any or Match All to control whether a customer must purchase any or all of the qualifying products.
Button Click Actions reward a customer for clicking a button.
Freeform Actions reward a customer for submitting open-ended text or details with an option to limit the word count and add image.
URL Destination Actions reward a customer for visiting a specific URL.
Setting Up Correlated Tasks
Add a correlated task when a specific action needs to be taken for each challenge participant, such as "Make X Donation." when the reward includes a donation. Manage correlated tasks from the task page.
Advance Customization
Configure the following optional settings for a challenge:
Post Confirmation Header — Header text shown to a customer after completing the challenge.
Post Confirmation Description — Description text shown to a customer after completing the challenge.
Action Description Header — Header text shown above the Action Description on the custom action page.
Action Tag — Tag applied to the action for internal reference.
Hide from rediem dash — Toggle On to hide the challenge from the dash, or Off to keep it visible.
Customer Community Post Approval — Toggle On to require approval before a customer's community post goes live, or Off to publish it automatically.
