What Does Recharge Do?
Recharge is one of the most used recurring billing and subscription solutions in the Shopify app store. With Recharge and rediem, reward customers when they hit specific subscription milestones.
Requirements
Before getting started, ensure you have:
A valid Recharge API key with the following permissions enabled: Discounts (write_discounts and read_discounts), Orders (write_orders and read_orders), Store information (store_info), and Subscriptions (read_subscriptions).
Products set up for subscription billing.
A Recharge account that uses either the Shopify Checkout Integration (SCI) or the Recharge Checkout on Shopify (RCS) platform type.
How to Integrate
Search for Recharge in the search bar.
2. Complete the onboarding details and click Next.
3. Go to Tools and Apps → API Tokens in the Recharge admin.
4. Click Create New and copy the generated API token.
5. Go to Integrations, select Recharge, enter the copied token in the API Key field, click Validate, then click Integrate.
6. Confirm that Recharge appears under Integrations with an Active status.
Add the Subscription Widget
Go to Themes and click Edit Theme.
2. Select Products from the dropdown to open the Products page.
3. Add the Subscription Widget – Recharge block and click Save.
📋 Note: Customers can add a subscription to a product from the Products page.
Check Your Recharge Account Platform Type
Before moving on to the next step, determine whether the Recharge account is on Recharge Checkout on Shopify (RCS) or Shopify Checkout Integration (SCI). Refer to this guide from Recharge to find out.
📋 Note for merchants on mSCI: Once Recharge has enabled the new integration for an account, customers can only use their subscription coupons on subscription purchases through Shopify checkout going forward. Any previously generated subscription coupon codes will only work in the Recharge customer portal, not in the Shopify checkout.
If the account is on any other platform type, the integration is not available at this time.
Setting Up Subscription Rewards
Once the integration is complete, set up rewards to apply to active subscription orders in rediem.
Steps to create subscription rewards:
Go to Program → Points in the rediem merchant admin.
Click Add Ways to Redeem.
Select Order Discount, Amount Discount, or Percent Discount from the basic reward options.
Configure the reward for subscribers by scrolling to Purchase Type and selecting Subscription or Both from the dropdown.
How Customers Redeem Subscription Rewards
Customers can redeem their subscription rewards by following these steps:
Log in to their account on the store.
Navigate to the Loyalty Dashboard and select Redeem.
Choose the Order, Amount, or Percent discount.
📋 Note: If a customer has multiple active subscriptions with different delivery schedules and redeems an order discount coupon, the coupon is automatically applied to the highest-priced subscription.
If the customer later cancels the subscription to which the coupon was applied, the coupon does not transfer to another active subscription. It remains associated with the canceled subscription, and the points used to redeem it are not refunded to the customer.
