Overview
How It Works
In an online store, rediem sets an end user's state as Customer or Guest once shopify creates a profile for them, either by signing in or by completing a purchase. This state depends only on the type of Shopify account the store uses, not on any loyalty settings.
On stores using classic accounts, an end user who creates an account has Customer state; everyone else has Guest state. On stores using new customer accounts, every end user has Guest state, since Shopify does not track whether someone deliberately created an account.
Separately, the Program Participants setting decides which of these end users actually count as loyalty members, meaning they can earn and redeem points. Merchants choose from three enrollment options, along with a start date for when the rule takes effect. The next section covers exactly how each option works.
How To Set It Up
Set Program Participants in rediem
Go to Settings → Program Participants in the rediem merchant admin.
Under Manage who is considered a loyalty member, choose one of the following:
Setting 1: Any customer with a legacy account, or a shop account that engages with the loyalty dash.
Setting 2: Any customer who creates a legacy account after the rediem start date, or any customer who opts in to loyalty after creating an account before the start date.
Setting 3: All customers are automatically enrolled by making a purchase or referring a friend (recommended for new customer accounts).
Under Start Date, set the date and time the loyalty program starts.
Click Save.
📋 Note: Before the program Start Date, only customers with a legacy account or a shop account that engages with the dash count as loyalty members. This lets merchants test the loyalty program before it goes live to all customers.
What Each Option Does
The option selected above decides who becomes a loyalty member, and it works differently depending on whether the store uses classic or new customer accounts.
On stores using classic accounts:
End User Action | Setting 1 | Setting 2 | Setting 3 |
Purchases without signing in | Guest, non-loyalty member. | Guest, non-loyalty member. | Guest, loyalty member. |
Signs in through the Shopify account icon | Customer, loyalty member. | Customer, loyalty member. | Customer, loyalty member. |
Signs in through Shop Pay | Customer, loyalty member. | Customer, loyalty member. | Customer, loyalty member. |
Signs in through the rediem widget | Customer, loyalty member. | Customer, loyalty member. | Customer, loyalty member. |
On stores using new customer accounts:
End User Action | Setting 1 | Setting 2 | Setting 3 |
Purchases without signing in | Guest, non-loyalty member. | Guest, non-loyalty member. | Guest, loyalty member. |
Signs in through the Shopify account icon | Guest, non-loyalty member (becomes a loyalty member after engaging with the dash). | Guest, non-loyalty member (becomes a loyalty member after opting in to loyalty). | Guest, loyalty member. |
Signs in through Shop Pay | Guest, non-loyalty member (becomes a loyalty member after engaging with the dash). | Guest, non-loyalty member (becomes a loyalty member after opting in to loyalty). | Guest, loyalty member. |
Signs in through the rediem widget | Guest, loyalty member. | Guest, loyalty member. | Guest, loyalty member. |
For the users who already existed before the loyalty program's start date, joining to the loyalty program depends on the option selected:
Under Setting 1, an end user with an existing legacy account must engage with the loyalty dash to become a loyalty member automatically.
Under Setting 2, an end user whose account was created before the Start Date must opt in to loyalty by checking a box and clicking Activate to become a loyalty member.
Under Setting 3, every end user automatically becomes a loyalty member once they make a purchase or refer a friend, regardless of when their account was created.
Key Notes
The Customer or Guest state depends only on account type; the Program Participants setting decides loyalty membership separately.
On new customer accounts, every end user has Guest state, since Shopify does not flag whether an account was intentionally created.
Under Setting 3, every end user becomes a loyalty member, regardless of account type or state.
On new customer accounts, signing in through the rediem widget grants loyalty membership immediately; signing in through the Shopify account icon or Shop Pay requires a separate dash engagement or opt-in first.
Before the Start Date, only legacy account holders or dash-engaged shop accounts count as loyalty members, so merchants can test the program before it goes live to all customers.
