Customer Accounts

Determine who becomes a member in your program

How It Works

rediem assigns every end user a state of Customer or Guest based on their Shopify account type. This state is set by Shopify, not by rediem, and determines how the Program Participants setting applies to them.

On stores using legacy accounts, end users who create an account have Customer state. Everyone else has Guest state. On stores using new customer accounts, every end user has Guest state, since Shopify does not track whether someone deliberately created an account.

The Program Participants setting in rediem then decides which end users count as loyalty members and can earn and redeem points.

How To Set It Up

Set Program Participants in rediem

  • Go to Settings → Program Participants in the rediem merchant admin.

  • Under Manage who is considered a loyalty member, choose one of the following:

    • Setting 1: Any customer with a legacy account, or a shop account that engages with the loyalty dash.

    • Setting 2: Any customer who creates a legacy account after the rediem start date, or any customer who opts in to loyalty after creating an account before the start date.

    • Setting 3: All customers are automatically enrolled by making a purchase or referring a friend (recommended for new customer accounts).

  • Under Start Date, set the date and time the loyalty program starts.

  • Click Save.

📋 Note: Before the program Start Date, only customers with a legacy account or a shop account that engages with the dash count as loyalty members. This lets merchants test the loyalty program before it goes live to all customers.

Shopify POS (Point of Sale) purchases behave the same way regardless of account type or Program Participants setting:

What Happens at POS

Existing non-loyalty end user

The Activate member screen appears. Once activated, the end user becomes an active loyalty member.

New end user created via POS

The Activate member screen appears. Once activated, the end user has Guest state and becomes an active loyalty member.

📋 Note: The Activate member screen only appears for end users who are not yet loyalty members. It does not appear for an end user who is already a loyalty member, across all three settings.

Existing Customers Before The Start Date

For end users who already had accounts before the program's Start Date:

  • Setting 1: Must engage with the loyalty dashboard to become a loyalty member automatically.

  • Setting 2: Must opt in by checking a box and clicking Activate.

  • Setting 3: Automatically enrolled once they make a purchase, engage with the dash, or refer a friend, regardless of when their account was created.

Key Notes

  1. Customer or Guest state is set by Shopify based on the store's customer account type, not by rediem or loyalty settings.

  2. On new customer accounts, every end user has Guest state since Shopify does not flag intentional account creation.

  3. Under Setting 3, every end user becomes a loyalty member regardless of account type.

  4. Shopify POS purchases show an Activate member screen for end users who are not yet loyalty members; it does not appear once they are already a loyalty member.
